The sheath makes the difference

Patch cords: FRNC instead of PVC

News 2026 04 FRNC PVC

In modern IT and network environments the focus is rightly on the security of the active components. But, when it comes to fire safety, one crucial (passive) component is often overlooked: the patch cords. In a fire, standard patch cords with PVC sheaths release toxic fumes which form strong hydrochloric acid when mixed with water – and this, in turn, can cause serious damage to the hardware.

Which is why – and because of growing demand – Datwyler IT Infra offers patch cords with FRNC/LSZH sheaths (Flame Retardant Non-Corrosive, Low Smoke Zero Halogen). These patch cords display much better fire and smoke behaviour than products with PVC sheaths. They are a safe, halogen-free alternative to traditional PVC solutions – and at reasonable prices.

Datwyler supplies Category 6 and 6A patch cords exclusively with halogen-free and flame retardant, non-corrosive sheaths; Category 5/5e patch cords are also available with the option of FRNC sheaths instead of PVC – for applications up to 1 Gbit/s in office, industrial and IT environments.

Benefits of FRNC sheaths in case of fire:
•  Lower smoke levels > better visibility and orientation
•  No corrosive gases > IT infrastructure is protected from consequential damages
•  Less toxic exposure > greater protection for personnel

Conclusion
Patch cords with PVC sheaths are chosen for their high level of flexibility and are a proven solution in a standard environment. Because of their halogen-free materials, products with FRNC sheaths provide additional safety. They are used wherever there are greater requirements in the event of a fire, for instance in sensitive areas such as data centres, public buildings or industrial installations.
