PROFINET over Single Pair Ethernet
Standardised Industry 4.0 communication
August 21, 2026
PROFINET over SPE now means that the proven PROFINET Ecosystem can be used on modern, space- and cost-saving Single Pair Ethernet infrastructure. Ethernet communication over a single pair from sensor to the cloud, and without changing existing applications: This technology is thus forming the basis for internationally standardised Industry 4.0 communication.
Machine manufacturers can continue using their existing PROFINET projects, engineering tools and diagnostic functions. The physical cabling changes, but not the application.
The key lies in a specific set of standards produced by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and numerous industry consortia:
• IEC TS 63444 defines the basic requirements for SPE systems and creates a common basis for different industrial Ethernet protocols.
• IEC 63171-7 Edition 2 standardises industrial SPE connectors (M8/M12/IP20) and ensures plug-and-play compatibility between manufacturers.
• IEC 61158-2-100 defines the physical layer for PROFINET over SPE and Ethernet-APL; it supports 10BASE-T1L and 100BASE-T1L, data transmission and power supply over the same line and ranges of up to approximately 1000 metres.
The benefits for you:
• Open, international standards provide investment security
• Identical technology globally for machine manufacturers and system operators
• Existing PROFINET applications can still be used
Future expansions will include higher data rates, longer transmission distances, additional security profiles and the integration of Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN).
